The tourist development
should be to the population’s service

M. Bignon and M. Cornette
in public meeting in Hourdel
 25th  november 2000
Famous for the quality of its environment like it is showed by the next Congress of the most beautiful bays of the world in Somme Bay, our region arouses an increasing tourist  infatuation.
This trend will become even more pronounced by the reduction of the working time.
Of course, we have to take advantage of the success known by our littoral. However, we have to prevent pitfalls that will consist in developing “Côte Picarde” to the detriment of the people living there, and who contribute to its expansion.
Listening to the inhabitants’ feelings about both the actual and future projects, looks like a necessity in the view of an harmonious development.
This feeling was confirmed during a public meeting taking place last December in the Hourdel.
The disruptions caused by the tourists attendance become more and more visible : anarchic parking and constant transit of vehicles (notably the campers), damage of the environment, etc.
This feeling is also shared by the people living in Le Crotoy invited to a meeting about the redevelopment of the town entrance, taking place last November.
We should not only attach importance to attract more and more visitors, but also ensure the integrity of the environment and the peace of the population.
We have to watch over that this balance is maintained, and prevent any  irreversible phenomenon of damage concerning the social, cultural and environmental lives.
The exercise of my task as the SMACOPI President is guided by these principles.

Jérome Bignon
